This dense perennial groundcover is, of course, the perfect replacement for the invasive Japanese spurge. Allegheny spurge grows 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads generously by rhizomes to form a soft carpet of large, scalloped-edged leaves. As summer moves into fall, the leaves display white or silver mottling and sometimes turn shades of purple. The foliage is evergreen in some areas but deciduous in zones 5 and 6, which includes Ohio.  Fragrant, white flowers on four-inch spikes bloom in early spring before the new leaves emerge. The plant needs to be in partial or full shade, and it does especially well in the dappled shade of large trees. It adapts to a variety of average to moist soil types and tolerates dry conditions once established. Thin out the plants periodically to promote good air circulation and prevent leaf blight.

Allegheny spurge is native to woodlands in the southern US from Kentucky south to Alabama and Mississippi. The genus name comes from the Greek words pachys, meaning "thick," and aner or andros, meaning "stamen," referring to the thickened white filaments. Procumbens means "trailing," referring to the stems' habit of reclining at the base.

Useful for woodland and native plant gardens and also for shady locations, including areas under trees, around shrubs, and along walkways. Mass on banks or slopes.
