This graceful, short-lived perennial grass reaches 4' tall and thrives in cool temperatures, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and stream bank stabilization. It features a smaller seed head than its relative, Canada Wild Rye, and showcases attractive fall colors of tan and crimson. Preferring rich, moist soil in clearings or along forest edges, it also adapts well to drier, sunnier conditions and tolerates shade, making it a good pioneer species for woodland restoration in full sun to full shade. It readily reseeds and can be used as a native cover crop at 1-5 lbs per acre. Various insects, including leafhoppers and caterpillars, feed on this grass, while livestock generally avoid it as it matures due to sharp seed heads.
