In spring, features rounded, gray-green basal leaves that make a great groundcover. In May, hairy flower stalks are topped by adorable clusters of small, white flowers that look like a cat's paws. Prefers full sun, but is able to thrive in dry, shady areas with a range of soil types. Reliable source of food for American and painted lady caterpillars.
Native habitats include prairies, dry meadows, sloped open woodlands, and disturbed sites such as eroded banks or abandoned fields.
Plant Characteristics:
Grows 6-10" tall and 8" wide.
Prefers full or part sun and adapts to full shade.
Grows in average to dry soils ranging from rocky, gritty, sandy to clay.
Wildlife Value:
Host plant for larvae of Amerian and painted lady butterflies. Deer, quails, and rabbits browse the foliage.
