Wood poppy has large, four-petaled, yellow flowers and hairy, oval-shaped fruits. The showy foliage is toxic to mammals, so this is a reliable plant for woodlands and shady gardens. It does well in sites that are moist and shady but tolerates average or slightly dry levels of moisture.
Wood poppy is affected by invasive garlic mustard and habitat destruction and is threatened or endangered in many areas; however, it's common throughout south and south-eastern Ohio.
Well-suited for shaded perennial beds, native plant gardens, and for naturalizing in moist woodlands. Use it as a specimen in a wildflower garden, along a shady path, or in a shaded rain garden.
