The large, strongly scented spikes of pinkish-purple blooms add a bold touch to gardens, borders, or naturalized areas from mid-summer to early fall. Native habitats include open woods and thickets.

Needs full sun; tolerates part shade.
 
Prefers moist to dry, well-drained soils, from sandy to loamy. Does well in dry soils once established. 
 
Blooms with pinkish-purple, tubular flowers. 
 
Spreads by underground stolons.
 
Wildlife Value:
Host plant to 3 species of Lepidoptera larvae: splendid brass looper, Anstenoptilia marmarodactyla, and Radliffe's dagger moth. Birds eat the seeds. Deer tend to ignore the plant.
