Light blue flowers on elongated spikes make a brief but striking appearance mid-April to May. Wild hyacinth thrives in full sun or the open shade of woodland edges. It prefers rich, acidic soils but also grows in clay soils with adequate moisture. It's the only eastern species of its genus in the Lily family.

 

Plant Characteristics:

Grows 2' tall.

 

Grows in full sun to light shade.

 

Prefers average to moist, rich, acidic soils. Grows in clay soils with enough moisture.

 

Blooms mid-April to early May.

 

Wildlife Value:

Attracts a wide array of native bees, wasps, flies and other pollinators. Browsed by deer.

 

Medicinal, Edible, and Other Uses:

The bulbs are edible and were prepared in a variety of ways by Native Americans and early settlers. 

Caution: Wild hyacinth bulbs are difficult to distinguish from Zigadenus elegans bulbs, which are deadly poisonous.
